Book Review: 'Between a Rock and a Hot Mess' by Phyllis Bourne.

'Between a Rock and a Hot Mess' is the first book I have read from Phyllis Bourne and it certainly won't be my last. I already have the second installment of this awesome 'The Sinclair Bride Series'  loaded on my Kindle and I absolutely cannot wait to dive in.

Blurb

Riley Sinclair has man problems. Trouble is, everyone has one but her.

After years on the sidelines at weddings, the head of Sinclair Construction now sits home alone on what used to be girls night. Her only companions are television, a bottle of wine and a crush on a stranger she doesn’t have the guts to approach. Too bad she isn’t more like the daring heroine of her favorite show Hot Mess. Men want to bed and wed the glamorous Delilah Cole, while rough-around-the-edges Riley is relegated to the friend zone.

Enter the perfect solution - an interactive app where the star of Hot Mess dishes style, beauty and relationship advice guaranteed to transform any woman into a man magnet. Riley re-invents herself, and thanks to the app, is on the brink of landing her dream man…and another she didn’t count on. Soon Riley’s embroiled in her own hot mess and has to choose between the Cinderella fairytale with the man she wants or the soul deep passion found only in the arms of the man she needs.

My Review

Where to even start? I loved every minute of this book!!! I loved Riley Sinclair from the very first page and knew that we were going to get along. I just loved that she was into sports and wasn't afraid to be herself and get passionate about what she loved. She had me laughing out loud with her attitude and narrative and kept me thoroughly entertained throughout the whole book. I could connect and relate to her vulnerability and awkwardness when trying to navigate the world of dating and I felt for her when she was trying to find the confidence to make the first move with someone she likes. When she does, it is in complete Riley fashion which will have you laughing but also cheering for her- she is very much a badass.

When we meet Hudson Parker I was nervous at first, handsome, gorgeous, sporty, owner of his own company and confident that he can rock Riley's world. At first I was scared that he was going to be one of those guys that isn't interested in a relationship and just wants to prove to himself that he can have any girl he wants, well dear reader, I do not want to spoil it, but if you're looking for a guy to melt your heart as well as make it skip a thousand beats, I highly suggest you pick up this book right now. Phyllis truly found that balance of confidence, sexy and ever the gentleman and I could not stop swooning. I don't want to spoil anything but I would very much like Parker to take me on a first date, oh my goodness!!!! (And if your head is in the gutter, get it out, that's not what I mean!! :p Read the book to find out!!)

I really enjoyed the journey of Riley finding herself. Using the Delilah Cole app gives her a bit of a boost and gets her out of her no dating rut but I adored that we get to see how changing yourself and worrying about looks, fashion and being someone you are not, doesn't find you the right suitor. I liked that element of being who you are and loving one another for exactly that. We can sometimes have an idea in our heads of what we want and then life can turn that on its head and surprise us. That message of listening to your heart and making sure you feel comfortable and loved and like you can be yourself around a person is so important.

Furthermore, it was so much fun getting to watch Riley in action on the softball field. It was just a really cool part of the book for me, in addition to the fact that she was a Construction Manager. I loved that she was strong, powerful and could hold the fort in places you might not always think of women being at the forefront.

The whole cast of characters in this book from Riley's sister, Hope, and best friend, Plum, to Hudson's family will have you smiling so big. They all have their own unique personalities that they bring to the table and that make this book such a fun, heartwarming, sexy and gorgeous read. I very much can't wait to dive into Hope's story next.

I highly recommend you pick up 'Between a Rock and a Hot Mess' today!

Happy reading.

Love
