Book Review: I found You by Lisa Jewell.

You might be quite surprised to see this book on our blog today. It's quite a departure from what I usually read and share, but my Mum gave it to me last week to try and I read it in two days. The funny thing is, I can't tell if I enjoyed it or not, but it was definitely an engrossing, can't put it down read. I'd love to hear your thoughts if you've read it!

The Blurb.

Everyone has secrets. What if you can't remember yours?
'How long have you been sitting out here?'
'I got here yesterday.'
'Where did you come from?'
'I have no idea.'
Lily has only been married for three weeks. When her new husband fails to come home from work one night, she is left stranded in a new country where she knows no one.
Alice finds a man on the beach outside her house. He has no name, no jacket, no idea what he is doing there. Against her better judgement, she invites him into her home.
But who is he, and how can she trust a man who has lost his memory?

My Review.

I want to elaborate on the 'can't tell if I enjoyed it' part, as my brain tries to figure out how to explain what I mean. On one hand I must have enjoyed it to carry on reading it and to finish it in two days, but on the other hand it was so far away from my comfort zone and quite creepy. Maybe part of me feels guilty for liking the suspense and being swept away by the horror of certain scenes? Like being intrigued into watching the serial killer documentaries on Netflix, when I wish the incidents had never taken place and these people didn't become infamous for such terrible crimes. If you're a fan of crime, suspense and thriller novels, I'd love to hear what it is you love about them!

I guess for me, I love romance, because I love the idea that these books could happen and if not they still fill my heart with warmth and put a big smile on my face, whereas a book like this terrifies me thinking that it could have happened (Mum always says these things come from someone's life story.) or could well happen. It's the same way I'm not a fan of horror or scary movies.

I digress, besides me trying to figure my thoughts out, it was a very interesting and clever read. I think the cleverness of it all was what I enjoyed the most. Lisa Jewell completely threw me off my tracks, when i'd been heading in a certain direction and she did this in a very entertaining way, that kept me going and got me talking about it! I think I put the book down for a minute and had to shout to my husband, "Oooh she got me!!" Maybe that's where the thrill of it all comes from? The mystery, the wonder, the what's going to happen?!

I don't really want to give anything away about the characters or say much about the story, because if you're into suspense or fancy reading something out of your comfort zone, you have to dive in for yourself and see what it's all about. On the off chance I haven't scared myself out of reading more, let me know any of your recommendations for other suspense filled novels. I may just have caught the bug enough to try another one!

You can pick up 'I Found You,' on Amazon.

Happy Reading!

  1. It's great you tried something new and it sounds like it was a real page turner! I'm like you, I prefer romance novels over any other genre! :) Does this author have other books?

    1. It really was! She does, she's written quite a lot and I think in a few different genres too, but her latest are all psychological thrillers. xx
