Author Interview with Lara Ward Cosio.

Recently I wrote a review about our current 'book of the month,' 'Hitting That Sweet Spot' and like I mentioned in that review, I simply haven't been able to stop squealing. Lara Ward Cosio's books captivate me. The depth of her characters, the beauty of their relationships and the stories that unravel between the pages have me hooked. After reading the third installment of her 'Rogue' series, the aforementioned 'Hitting That Sweet Spot', I knew I had to reach out to Lara and find out more, more about the awesome woman behind the books and more about the incredible characters within them. So, today I give you an interview with the wonderful Lara Ward Cosio.

When did you get the idea for your ‘Rogue’ book series? How did it come about?
I’d always been struck by the story of Eric Clapton falling for George Harrison’s wife - he wrote “Layla” for her and eventually stole her from his friend. I’d also wondered about bands like the Rolling Stones or U2 who have amazing longevity and how being together for so long must lead to a lot of drama we don’t necessarily see. My “own” band formed in my head where I could see various scenarios play out, including my interest in the idea that a truly great artist comes from a place of pain. The characters quickly took on a life of their own and led me into their world.

Are the characters in these books based on any real life experiences, encounters you’ve had with Rockstars?
Not really, sad to say! I’ve always studied people, including their accents and mannerisms, and so I’m sure my obsession with watching music videos and concerts helped along the way! Oh, and there was the one time I had the job of escorting Bono up to the 11th floor of my office building. He was nice enough but stared at his BlackBerry the whole way. Still, he has a very big presence. Some people just have it.

Is there a character in all of the series that you feel the most close to or connect with more than the others?
I know some people dislike him, but I will always love Gavin the most. He’s the one that started this whole thing (in my mind), and there’s something about his wounded, passionate, romanticism that steals my heart. Must be the Sophie in me!

Ok, so I have to ask, even though I don’t quite know if I could even answer this question myself, it’s a little tricky, but if you could go on a date with one of the Rogue boys, who would it be? Gavin, Connor, Shay or Martin?

Tough question for sure!
Gavin would be the most romantic - swoon.
Conor would be the most self-assured - sexy.
Shay would be the most restrained - intriguing.
Martin would do whatever YOU wanted - you take control.
So, while my heart is with Gavin, I think I’d like to go on a date with Conor, just to be around someone that staggeringly good looking AND have his full attention, if only for a night!

What was the first concert you ever went to?
Believe it or not, I saw Duran Duran when I was 11 years old! I saw Wham! soon after, so you can see that I was a New Wave girl. All that didn’t last too long, though.

Do you have a favourite artist?
U2 took over where Duran Duran left. It was at about the same time that I started to really listen to lyrics and crave some meaning in my music, not to mention passion! The other band that rivals U2 is The Killers, for the same reasons. I will go out of my way to see either band live whenever possible. I’m also a devotee of Arctic Monkeys, Hozier, The Lumineers, Coldplay, Mumford & Sons, Alabama Shakes, Bishop Briggs, and Jeff Buckley.

Your books make me so happy and reinforce my title of being a complete and utter bookworm, what books make you happy?
It may seem odd, but the books that I enjoy most are detective novels! There are a few authors who have a series that I will auto-buy because the story is never *really* about the crime - it’s about the detective/protagonist and their own complex, imperfect life and how this reveals itself during the pursuit for the victim’s truth. So, that being said, I love Tana French, Michael Connelly, Louise Penny, Karin Slaughter, Daniel Silva, and Adrian McKinty, among others!

Do you have a specific spot where you write your wonderful books or do you write anywhere?
The only constant for me and writing is my ChromeBook and having a ton of tabs on my browser open for researching! I can take my little laptop anywhere and write, which is a good thing since I am often trying to sneak it in amongst the craziness of other things going on. I have a pretty good ability to focus, though I wish I could write faster.

We are big foodies here on the blog, so we must ask, are snack a must when you write? Are you a sweet or savory person?
I love a handful of dark chocolate covered pretzels - a little sweet and salty crunch goes a long way!

We love that books have the ability to whisk you off to other places. Moments of ‘Hitting That Sweet Spot’ took place in one of my dream destinations to visit, San Francisco. Do you have a Travel bucket list? And if yes, where in the world would you like to visit?
I lived in San Francisco for college and several years afterward and still love it! I haven’t been to New York since I was a kid, and so want to experience it again. I’d love to get to some of the places featured in my books that I haven’t actually been to! Those include Greece, St. Moritz, Morocco, Australia, and Formentera (Spain). I’d also love to visit Japan and Vietnam for something completely different. I’ll be taking a girls trip with my mom and sister this summer to Italy, so I’m hoping to gather some good information for a future book!

There are so many music festivals around the world, is there one that you would absolutely love to go to?
I’d LOVE to go to Glastonbury or something like a Lollapalooza show in São Paulo. The crowds in those areas are so committed that I know no matter who was playing it would be an amazing time.

Have you been to any close to home?
Not yet - but maybe the Life Is Beautiful Festival in Las Vegas one of these days.
