Mangia: Homemade Baci...Yep!!

If we had to pick one chocolate in the whole wide world to be our ultimate favourite, it would be Baci! These little hazelnut and chocolate kisses have been in our lives for as long as we can remember. We adore them.

No parcel from Italy is ever complete without our Auntie's having scattered a few in the box or thrown in a few boxes or bags of them for good measure. Italian lessons have taken place after every lunch at Nanna and Grandad's while we try and read the little 'love notes' to Grandad to see if he can guess what on earth it is we are saying. And no afternoon coffee with Nanna is quite right without a Baci or two.

So, with all those memories and wonderful moments in mind when we found this recipe on Pinterest we thought it would be the perfect Italian treat to try and make, just in time for Valentines Day too!

We found this recipe on Pinterest!

What you need:

200g Whole Hazelnuts
200g Nutella/Chocolate Spread
80g Cocoa Powder
350g Dark Chocolate

What to do:

Set 30 hazelnuts aside for the top of your Baci.

Crush/Chop the hazelnuts then add to a bowl with the chocolate spread and cocoa powder.

Mix it all together until you get a paste, then roll in balls and place a hazelnut on top.

Place in the freezer for about 30 minutes to firm up.

Using a double boiler, melt the dark chocolate in a deep bowl. Lower one Baci at a time into the chocolate with a fork, make sure to coat the whole Baci. Then place on a tray to set.

Our Notes:

We really enjoyed making these, but just had a few thoughts on the recipe.

1. It says makes 30 - we made maybe 15 or so...maybe we were just too generous!! :p

2. 200g of chopped hazelnuts seemed a little too much, we would put a little in at a time so you have a good paste consistency. Ours felt like all the hazelnuts were making it too crumbly so it was hard to form into balls. This was the first time making it, so maybe we just need more practice. Let us know how you get on and what you think.

3. We're actually glad we used Tesco's own chocolate spread as they were quite rich. We think Nutella would have been even sweeter. Depends what you like.

All in all though, it was loads of fun to actually make our own 'Baci' With a few ingredients and simple recipe, we'd definitely make them again. They taste really good and were lovely to share with our family!

  2. Haha I love that it only made half the serving amount suggested - you made bacioni instead of baci :P I just bought a box of Baci from the shop because, as one would imagine, they was quite a selection and they were on sale! But next time, I think I might want to try and make them.....it looks pretty easy! :) Un bacione a voi due ;)

  3. Bellissimi baci! You can tell by the photo that they taste good. My friend brought me some 'special edition' Baci from Roma for Christmas. they were white chocolate raspberry with hazelnuts. Different, but still yummy. Ciao, Cristina
