Dolce Vita Bloggers: Cara Italia.

Cara Italia,

Our love for you holds no bounds and has done since we were little girls. Is it your mouthwatering food, that is made with a only a handful of ingredients, yet tastes like there is magic in every bite? Is it your beautiful scenery, that takes our breath away and leaves us transfixed in the moment, just looking at the sea? Is it your people, who's passion and love surpasses all that we have been in contact with? Truth be told Italia, it is all of these things and more...

... Growing up, we had visited your alluring country a couple of times and it always felt like home. Family and food make our world go round and so we were quite content being in the place that offered both of these in abundance. As the years passed and new adventures began, we learnt more about you and discovered a passion that burned brighter every day. Lemon groves and olive trees stole our dreams at night. During the day time our kitchens became canvases, to which we tackled the dishes you had taught us. The thought of you bought comfort in another world away from home. The sound of you, the language, the music, filled us with a happiness we wish we could bottle and keep forever. You were always present, always there and we itched at the thought of visiting you again.

Somehow, sixteen years had gone by without us gracing your idyllic coast. After all those years our return, though we wished would have been under different circumstances, confirmed and reassured us that our love for you is stronger than ever. You see Italia, sixteen years is a long time. We worried that things could have changed, that we had been building you up, only to be let down, and yet as soon as we stepped foot in Il Belle Paese, we knew our love for you hadn't. We remembered the sharp corners, the winding roads, the quaint shops and the stacked houses, that we thought we would have forgotten. Memories flooded our minds and we felt as though we had never left. Those years away hadn't changed anything and we felt like we were returning home. Standing on Nanna's balcony, it was too difficult to capture the emotion, the feelings that your breathtaking views evoked. There was a calmness, a complete and utter feeling of serenity, that has to be experienced not simply spoke of.

Waking up at 5am and walking the dark streets, with suitcases in tow, is not something we would usually do anywhere else in the world, but on this last trip Italia, we did just that, and we have never felt more safe in your arms. As we navigated through the little fishing village of Praiano, that we have had etched in our minds, since we were four, we listened to the calming sound of the sea and smiled at the cars and the people who were awake and ready for the day ahead. We watched the sunrise and knew in our hearts, what we have known for a very long time; we are so blessed to know you Italia, but not just to know you, to feel your heartbeat in sync with ours, to understand your passion and to have a bond with you that cannot be broken...

... We have a long history Italia, you hold the key to our hearts. Yes, we love your delicious food, stunning scenery and relaxed way of life, but more than that we love what you gave us. You gave us two reasons why your country is like a second home, you gave us two reasons why a place can hold such strong emotions, you gave us two reasons to explain our passion: You gave us our Nanna and Grandad, and that Italia is the number one reason we will love you unconditionally, for the rest of our lives.

Ti Voglio Bene Per Sempre.

  7. What a beautiful letter. I can completely understand your gratitude for all the things Italy has given you, as I have been given the same gifts from this wonderful country. I think that even though we haven't visited as often, or even lived there, Italy has still profoundly affected us and helped form who we are, as we visited from such a young age.
I hope you get to visit again soon!
